This course is also intended to provide practicing hairdressers who wish to obtain a formal qualification with the opportunity to do so.

The minimum age requirement is 16 years.

The individuals who apply for this course need to have basic skills in reading and writing, possess basic calculating competences and be able to use the computer for research purposes.

Good interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, including listening skills, will be ideal as it will enhance working with clients.

Time-keeping skills and a well groomed appearance are all desirable qualities for this type of learning program.

1st year includes

  • Hairdressing career paths and job opportunities that exist within the industry. (6 ECTS)

  • Health, safety, security and emergency procedures. (3 ECTS)

  • Consultation techniques. (3 ECTS)

  • Shampoo and condition hair to include scalp massage (9 ECTS)

Hairdressing:

  • Style and dress hair (6 ECTS)

2nd year includes

  • Cut hair in a variety of styles. (9 ECTS)

  • Colour and lighten hair (12 ECTS)

  • Perm or straighten hair (9 ECTS)

  • Reception duties (3 ECTS)

 

1 Hairdressing career paths and job opportunities that exist within the industry. (6 ECTS)

  • The role of key players in the field of the chosen career.

  • What options are open to them and where their chosen career path can lead them.

  • The importance and contents of a contract of employment.

  • Their statutory rights and responsibilities as employees or employer.

  • The role of sectorial associations, suppliers and manufacturers to update their skills and knowledge

  • The role of alternative information sources such as the internet, Youtube training videos and online learning sources.

 

2 Health, safety, security and emergency procedures. (3 ECTS)

  • Health and Safety is fundamental to all personal services offered to the public. Hairdressers use products and electrical tools that could pose a health hazard if used incorrectly. Professional hairdressers have an important role in safeguarding their own health and that of the salon clients and other visitors.

  • Members of the public attending the salon need to know that they are in safe hands so it is of utmost importance that persons providing services are competent.

  • Therefore, this module is one of the first to be taught during the course.

  • This unit is about being able to demonstrate the ability to maintain health safety and security practices in the salon and follow the necessary emergency procedures.

 

3 Consultation techniques. (3 ECTS)

  • Consulting with clients with regard to hairdressing services is a fundamental skill for any service that involves hairdressing or barbering.

  • Methods of communication needed to obtain information so as to provide the correct service and advice to clients and recognise any limiting factors that would prevent the service requested from being carried out.

 

4 Shampoo and condition hair to include scalp massage (9 ECTS)

  • Every service performed in a salon requires the hair to be cleansed by shampooing, either at the start or at the end of the service, shampooing and conditioning is an essential part of hairdressing training.

 

  • Learner will be able to choose the correct shampoo and conditioner, and how to shampoo and conditioner effect the hair and scalp.

  • Learner will be able to provide scalp massage treatments.

 

5 Style and dress hair (6 ECTS)- Hairdressing option

  • Styling hair by different methods is a basic and necessary skill that is an important part of the hairdressing profession.

  • Roller setting, blow drying straight and curly.

  • Dressing long hair using basic techniques

 

Year 2

6 Cut hair in a variety of styles. (9 ECTS)

  • The learner can cut hair

  • Create a variety of looks for men and or women

 

7 Colour and lighten hair (12 ECTS)

The learner can colour

  • Full head

  • Regrowth

  • Basic lightening.

 

8 Perm or straighten hair (9 ECTS)

  • How to Perm and Neutralise hair using a variety of sectioning and winding techniques.

  • Smooth and relax hair using various product and methods.

 

9 Reception duties (3 ECTS)

  • This module provides the skills and competences that are so needed in the hair salon.

They include handling payments and sensitive client data.

 

The course is held in a classroom environment Sessions are a mix of theory and practical sessions. Theory sessions develop knowledge base and practical sessions on mannequins and real clients will allow the students to boost their technical skills

Practical assessments are done through practical observation

Theoretical assessments are done though assignments and or portfolios

 

Practical Observation:

Assessments are carried out when the tutor observes the learner carrying out the practical work to the tutor's satisfaction. Tutor must be convinced that the learner can perform the tasks assigned to them without help and within the time frame specified.

Written assignments and / or portfolios

Each unit of learning is composed of a number of learning outcomes which are judged by means of written assignments or portfolios.

These can include tables, charts and reports that are the result of the students referenced research.

Differently able students

Those students that are confirmed by the relevant authority - may be allowed to produce evidence of their knowledge and an understanding of the subjects by alternative means. E.g. interpreter or facilitator.
