  • Level Three qualification in hairdressing or beauty.

  • Recognised basic First Aid Course.

  • Several years’ experience in the hair salon industry may also be considered as a good point of entry. The prospective students undergo a pre-acceptance practical test so that their actual level of competence is determined before they embark on the course.

  • The individuals who apply for this course need to have quite a high level of reading and writing, calculating and problem-solving capacity. To establish proficiency, they sit for a test (unless they possess a recognised qualification, in English and Maths)

  • Competences required include computer use for research purposes.

  • Leading skills, good interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills, including listening skills, are ideal as they enhance working with clients.

  • Time-keeping skills and a well groomed appearance are all desirable qualities for this type of learning program.

 

9 Modules split over 2 years

1st year includes

1  Monitor and maintain Health and safety in the salon (6 ECTS)

2 Support staff during Consultation (6 ECTS)

3  Shampoo and condition to include scalp massage as a service  (18 ECTS)

4  Style and dress hair (12 ECTS)

5  Bridal Styling (12 ECTS)

 

2nd year includes

6 Cutting hair (18 ECTS)

7 Colour and lighten hair (24 ECTS)

8 Perm or straighten hair (18 ECTS)

9 Reception duties (6 ECTS)

 

1 Take responsibility to ensure Health, safety, security and emergency procedures of a salon.

2 Support colleagues and provide guidance in consultation techniques.

3 Advanced knowledge of techniques, ingredients and their action with regards to shampooing and conditioning hair.

4 Style and dress hair to create a variety of classic, modern, or avant-garde looks.

5 Bridal and special-occasion hairstyles to include plaiting, braiding, weaving, torsions etc.

6 Cut hair in a variety of styles utilising various tools and creating various looks 7 Colour and lighten hair and correct / adjust hair colour.
8 Perm and straighten hair with advanced techniques.
10 Support colleagues and staff, providing instruction for given situations e.g. reception and client handling.

 

The learner will be able

  • To perform all practical hairdressing tasks autonomously, competently, safely within acceptable time frames.

  • Understand and analyse hair and scalp conditions.

  • Give instructions to others and supervise them to carry out specific complex technical tasks.

  • Communicate theoretical and technical information in a work or learning context.

  • Interact with and generate solutions to problems within the salon environment.

  • Take responsibility for tasks undertaken by self and others for carrying out such tasks, ensuring that quality assurance mechanisms are in place.

  • The learner will be in possession of the underpinning knowledge required to carry out complex hairdressing tasks while taking responsibility for the above. 

 

The course is held in a classroom environment Sessions are a mix of theory and practical sessions. Theory sessions develop knowledge base and practical sessions on mannequins and real clients will allow the students to boost their technical skills

 

Practical assessments are done through practical observation.

Theoretical assessments are done though assignments and or portfolios

 

Practical Observation:

Students are observed by the tutor performing various practical tasks and assessed against a set of criteria which reflect the knowledge and skills and competence listed in the individual units.

Tutor must be convinced that the learner can perform the complex tasks assigned to them without help and within the time frame specified.

Written assessments

Each unit of learning is composed of a number of learning outcomes which are judged by means of written assignments and / or portfolios as the case may be.

Assignments: These can include tables, charts and reports that are the result of the students’ referenced research.
Portfolio: Documented learner work.

Differently able students

Those students that are confirmed by the relevant authorities - are allowed to produce evidence of their knowledge and an understanding of the subjects by alternative means. E.g. interpreter or facilitator.
